Do You Want Success This Year? Change Your Mind

Hey Reader -

Hey—your Future Self just called and wants a sit-down. You know that long, ambitious Goals List that looked so good on January 1? It may be time for some cuts.

Are You Making the Right Investments?

Changing course is never comfortable, but it's figureoutable—that's what make-up entrepreneur Bobbi Brown discovered. She expected a tough conversation, but was blindsided by the news that her brand deal and personal contract were being restructured. At best, she would be a figurehead.

As Bobbi tried to get her bearings, a remarkable thought cut through the noise: I don't have to worry about all the problems that no one was helping me fix. Suddenly, the stress of random details—from store lighting to the free duty shop in Germany—dropped away.

She remembers, "It was really a gift in the long run because I was not happy. The last two years were really tough. But the last year was just miserable, awful."

One thing was certain: All the lessons learned were coming with her in her next venture. Enter the Jones Road line.

Use Soft Skills to Rethink and Refine

In the January series, 4 Power Moves to Reach Your Intentions, we're discussing how you can overcome common blocks to setting intentions. Are you at a crossroads as you look at your Goals List? Do you relate to the case study, where you don't want to invest in what's in front of you, but you can't quite articulate what's coming next? Those insights are positive—they show you're leaning on people skills like clarity and discernment.

Motivation or a sense of obligation may fuel you for a while, but those qualities won't be enough to carry you through the rest of the year. If anything, sticking to aspirations when your heart isn't in it makes things worse.

So, rather than feeling nervous that your Spidey Sense has kicked in, cultivate the ability to assess people and situations quickly and take decisive action. Those competencies aren't a nice-to-have—they're marketable skills.

And if you need to redefine or wind down a commitment, try these ways:

Changing course is never comfortable, but it's figureoutable. So, have a meeting with your Future Self and fine-tune your Goals List. 🌟

All the best,

Michelle Mains

Hey Reader - Once I was asked to lead a cross-group project to fix a broken process. By the time the team formed, the workflow was so busted that everyone was happy about a refresh. I thought my Lead would be thrilled to hear how quickly we pinpointed the gaps and adjusted. That's why her opening gotcha question of, "Who's the bad guy here?" threw me off balance. I'm not normally at a loss for words, but I was stunned. Suddenly, her problem-solving narrative became clear: "Find the bad guy....

Hey Reader - After decades of marriage, Broadway star Mandy Patinkin and his wife Kathryn Grody know a little something about conflict. On their podcast Don't Listen to Us, Grody complained how splashy celebrity weddings give people the impression that marriage is a series of Instagram moments. More often, the daily grind is filled with differences of opinion, hard conversations, and working to find the middle ground. And here's one more tip no one tells you: There's usually more to the...

Hey Reader - You may know Danny Trejo as a sinister villain in movies like Machete, but he's a big softie off camera. It wasn't always like that. After a rough start in life including stints in prison and solitary confinement, Trejo joined a 12-step program and embraced sobriety. Recovery wound up being the steppingstone to his acting career. After helping someone on the set of "Runaway Train," Danny was offered the chance to be on camera. Reflecting back, Danny says, "Everything good that...
